The Centro de Cirugía de Mínima Invasión “Jesús Usón” (CCMIJU) is a multidisciplinary institution devoted to excellence in research and training in minimally invasive surgical (MIS) techniques. It is committed to technological development and innovation in health care, and for its advancement it works closely with companies from all over the world.
The latest generation equipments and singular scientific facilities are available at the CCMIJU, allowing for the highest possible level of research and training for health professionals worldwide. Due to these facilities and services, CCMIJU is part of a Research Infrastructure (ICTS), NANBIOSIS, for different MIS techniques and disciplines: Bioengineering and Health Technologies, Laparoscopy, Endoscopy, Microsurgery, Endoluminal Therapy and Diagnosis, Anesthesiology and Pharmacy applying combined techniques and multidisciplinary equipment for treatment approach, thus benefiting the patient and providing higher precision to the surgeon.The CCMIJU offers a sequential model of accredited Training and Research Health Centre and Reference Centre for Endoscopy Teaching (ESGE), with almost 1900 attendants from all over the world in over 160 training activities every year. Besides, CCMIJU has participated in over 150 competitive projects; it has over 100 scientific papers in journals indexed in the Journal Citation Reports and over 50 books and book chapters.
Members of the Staff
Dr. Francisco M. Sánchez Margallo has a PhD in Veterinary Science (University of Extremadura) and is the Scientific Director at the Jesús Usón Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre located in Cáceres, Spain. He has directed over 400 training activities related to minimally invasive surgery, including national and international training courses for surgeons and health professionals. He has written more than 110 scientific articles with Impact Factor and more than 150 academic articles related to Minimally Invasive Surgery and other surgeries. He is the author of 16 books and co-author of 49 book chapters. He has presented 254 scientific posters, more than 500 oral communications and a number of lectures at National and International Congresses. Dr. Sánchez Margallo is a reviewer of several scientific journals; has directed 19 doctoral theses, has participated in 80 research projects granted by public and private entities, and he is a member of several Scientific Committees of a number of Symposium and Conferences.
Dr. José Blas Pagador is the coordinator of the Bioengineering and Health Technologies (BHT) Unit of Jesús Usón Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre and Doctor at the University of Extremadura. His research is focused on medical technology, mainly oriented towards surgical training and surgeon’s ergonomics. He has a wide experience on user requirements extraction as well as on the validation of surgical devices for minimally invasive surgery training. He has participated in over 30 research projects and he has published more than 40 scientific papers and more than 75 national and international proceedings. He has organized 6 international scientific meetings and a national one, all of them related to medical engineering. Furthermore, he is author of two patents, two utility model and five community designs.
Dr. Javier Sánchez-Fernández is responsible for training activities at the Jesús Usón Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre. He obtained his degree in Veterinary at the University of Extremadura in 2002, where he also obtained his Diploma of Advanced Studies in 2009 and his PhD in 2015. As responsible of training activities, he has supervised the execution of more than 900 training activities, both at national and international levels, in which more than 11.000 trainees have took part. He has also organized 31 national and international training activities. Besides, he is head of studies of the JUMISC as affiliated center to the University of Extremadura and accredited reviewer of the Commision of the Ongoing Education for Health Professions in Extremadura. He has participated in 3 research projects related to surgical training and is author or co-author of 4 papers in journals, 6 communications to conferences, 1 book chapter and 1 book. He has also organized several national symposiums.
Dr. Idoia Díaz-Güemes holds a Neuroscience University Expert title (2007), PhD of Veterinary Science at the University of Extremadura (2004) and Veterinary Degree in Zaragoza University (1999). Since 2009, she has been in charge of the Laparoscopy Department of Centro de Cirugía de Mínima Invasión Jesús Usón. Her expertise field is training and research in minimally invasive surgery, especially laparoscopic surgery. She is also focused on pathologic animal model creation by laparoscopy. She has a wide experience on surgical training thanks to the more than 400 training courses she has organized for the 15 last years. She works in close cooperation with surgeons of different human surgical specialties (mainly gynaecology, urology, paediatric and digestive surgery) in these training courses. The purpose of the courses is to transfer psychomotor skills acquired on experimental models and cognitive training to the clinical practice. Overall, she has participated in more than 45 research projects, published 15 peer-review articles, 3 book chapters and presented more than 50 international and national communications in congresses. She also is author of three patents.
Mr. Jesús M. Repilado Regodón is Computer Engineer by the Universidad de Extremadura since 2011. He obtained the master Degree in Research in Engineering in 2012. He has worked as researcher at the Bioengineering and Health Technologies Unit at the Jesús Usón Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre, focusing his efforts in the development of software applications for ergonomic analysis. Afterwards, he began to work in the Computer Science, Image Processing and Communications Service, where he currently works as software and multimedia designer and analyst, being responsible for the creation and maintenance of websites, programming and management of intranet and extranet.
Ms. Luisa F. Sánchez-Peralta obtained her Telecommunication Engineer degree in 2008 at the University of Seville where she got a research fellowship. She made her degree thesis in 2008 in the Medical Imaging Center at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) and in 2010 she obtained the Master degree at University of Extremadura. Since 2008, she works as a researcher at the Bioengineering and Health Technologies Unit of Jesús Usón Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre. Her main research lines are the validation of surgical simulators and new approaches for minimally invasive surgery training, both in-person and online, including new ICT technologies within the training process. She has participated in 11 research projects and has published 14 scientific papers, as well as 44 proceedings in national and international congresses. She has organized 4 international scientific meetings and a national one, all of them related to medical engineering. Furthermore, she is also author of a patent.
